My Simpleton Way to Feel Better!
For all those non-fitness buff readers who want something "simple" to better their health, here is my regimen
For the last three weeks, I've been trying to get healthier. But I was limited by the budget, so I had to think creatively. I was recently allowed to use weights (there was a reason I had to hold off a little while), so I've started a simple upper body routine.
So for all those non-fitness buff readers who want something "simple" to better their health, here is my regimen:
- I walk and/or run at least one mile everyday. The most balanced routine for me is splitting the walking and running over the mile. I do try to run a mile once or twice a week though.
- Lift small pound weights (1-5 lbs) 30 minutes a week. I've split it up into 3-5 minute sessions every day while I am warming up to walk or just watching television. Inexpensive hand weights can be found at Target (www.target.com) or Walmart (www.walmart.com) for about $3-6 each (depending on the weight.)
- Eat sensibly. I am doing Weight Watchers Points Plus, which is a very flexible way to control your eating habits. It has worked well for us because one of us has food allergies and we're both slightly picky eaters.
If you are tight on money and can't afford membership and meetings at WW (I know I can't pay it right now), there is a budget way to do it. Android phones can download a free application called "WW Points Plus" that calculates your point range based on sex, height and weight. It also calculates the points value of food on the go, which is helpful if you're shopping and weighing what foods to get!

Lastly, don't make it a numbers game. Yes, I want to lose 20+ lbs and have to weigh in at least every few weeks, but there are other ways to tell if you are getting healthier. I love feeling a pair of pants looser or fitting in a dress that never fit before. I've marveled at how much better I feel going up flights of stairs or how I can lift a little more weight without a struggle. Find your own ways of knowing you're healthier.
