Internet surfers were jilted this week as congress began pushing the Anti-Piracy legislation bill forward. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales made an announcement on popular social media website Twitter Monday evening, stating their website would be shut down for a total of 24 hours, in efforts to protest against the bill.
Goliath search engine Google joined the battle by adding a black censor bar over their homepage logo, which is followed by a brief message "Tell Congress: Please don’t censor the web!” Wales suggested on Twitter that he hoped Wikipedia’s 25-million daily users would contact their Congressional representatives in protest of the bills.
Unfortunately Wikipedia's 25-million had to use an alternative method of acquiring contact information for their local representatives, because the site was blacked out for 24 hours.
