Celebrate National Beer Day in Monroe on April 7

A free brewery workshop is being held in Monroe on April 7, 2016.

By JCARLINO (Open Post)

Celebrate National Beer Day by learning firsthand how beer is made. The workshop, sponsored by the Trumbull Library, will demonstrate brewing a beer, answer questions, go into the history and beer styles and provide samples of 3 to 4 different home brews.

This workshop will be presented off-site at 246 Main Street, Monroe 6 p.m. at the Veracious Brewing Company. The brewery is owned and operated by Trumbull residents Tess and Mark Szamatulski.

Registration is limited to those over 21 years of age and to the first 50 registrants. Only those registered through the library's website will be admitted.

April 7th is the date beer became legal again in the United States after the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on March 23, 1933. That law was enacted on April 7th allowing the brewing and sale of beer in the United States again as long as it was < 3.2% (4% ABV). It's said that people waited in line overnight on April 6th outside Milwaukee breweries in order to legally buy beer for the first time in over 13 years. April 7th is a very beer specific celebration since prohibition did not officially end until December 5th later that year.

Tess and Mark Szamatulski have the largest home brewing supply store in the Northeast. Veracious Brewing Company was started last June and is this area's first brewery and tap room. Out of over 900 breweries in 2015, 33 breweries were voted as the top breweries and Veracious was included in this list - according to an article published in Beer Advocate, a national publication that rates beers both nationally and internationally.

The Szamatulskis are the authors of two of the best-selling beer recipe books, Clone Brews, Second Edition and Beer Captured. They have been filmed for the Discovery Channel's series How Things Work and have been featured on Channel 8 CT Style and Time.com. The Szamatulskis have lived in Trumbull for over 25 years.
