Monroe PD Welcomes K-9 Murphy

The Monroe Police Department is proud to announce the addition of K9 Murphy to the department’s ranks.

Murphy is an 18-month-old, purebred German Shepherd from Hungary. Murphy started training on Dec. 1, with his handler, Officer John McAulay, and completed the course on Jan. 30.

Murphy is trained as a multi-purpose police dog certified in narcotics detection, tracking, building searches, evidence retrieval, apprehension, and protection. He is certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association and Connecticut Police Work Dog Association.

Murphy was purchased and trained through Renbar Kennels in New Milford, Connecticut. The funds to purchase and train Murphy were donated by AKC Reunite and consists of a grant and individual contributions raised through the efforts of the AKC affiliate Trap Falls Kennel Club. The Sprint For Monroe Committee also donated funds to support the canine team.

The Monroe Police Department will be holding a swearing-in ceremony for Murphy on Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. in the Monroe Police Department Training Room.

The ceremony will be open to the public and a special invitation goes to anyone who donated to the AKC’s “Gofundme” account in Murphy’s name. The ceremony will include a demonstration (weather permitting) and refreshments at the conclusion.
