Obituary: Barbara Allen, 79, of Monroe

"Her passions were in gardening, cooking, camping and traveling in her later years."

Barbara Jean (Griffin) Allen, age 79 of Monroe passed away peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2017 at St. Vincent's Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was born September 7, 1937 in Torrington, Connecticut, daughter of the late Brian and Gertrude (Simons) Griffin, and had been a longtime Monroe resident. Barbara worked as a visiting nurse for years with United Home Healthcare before retiring. Barbara spent the majority of her life raising and caring for her family.

Her passions were in gardening, cooking, camping and traveling in her later years with her long-time companion Everett. There was never a time that Barbara didn't have a Smokey the cat by her side. Barbara will always be remembered for her amazing meatloaf and pot roast dinners for her family.

Barbara is survived by her four children, Paul Allen, Jr and his wife Lynn of Oxford, Connecticut; John Allen and his wife Rachel of Ansonia, Connecticut; Scott Allen and his wife Lisa of Sandy Hook, Connecticut and her daughter Tracey Ludvinsky and her husband Ken of Southbury, Connecticut. She was predeceased by her infant son, Ronald Lee Allen. Barbara was a grandmother to ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild and was an aunt to many nieces and nephews. Barbara, the oldest of seven children, is survived by her siblings Virginia Tripp, Sandra Ekvall, Laura DelNegro, David Griffin, Martha Badeau and John Griffin.

Calling hours will be Friday, March 31, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 7:00 p.m. at Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike (Route 111), Monroe, Connecticut. The family will have a private burial.
