UPDATE: Driver Fell Asleep Leading to Serious Accident
Monroe police say the man told police he fell asleep which led to the accident. Three people were hospitalized.

Update 7 p.m.: Monroe police released the names of those involved and more details about the serious Route 25 crash that resulted in three people being taken to the hospital Wednesday morning.
Giovanni Thompson, 20 of 95 Pond Street, Bridgeport, was traveling south on Route 25 when he crossed over the center line and struck a tractor trailer traveling north, police said. Thompson stated on scene that he must have fallen asleep, police said.
The tractor trailer, carrying heating fuel was operated by Robert Colburn, 66 of 39 East Park Lane, New Milford.

Post collision he steered the tractor and tanker off the right side of the road and maneuvered to miss electrical poles and struck several large pine trees, police said.
Thompson was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

No updates on medical conditions are available. All injuries were serious but non-life threatening.
Update 6 p.m. Route 25 in Monroe is now fully open after being partially closed for the past 10 hours after a serious accident, which left three people injured.
Update 12:50 p.m. From the Monroe Police Department: “We were able to open one lane of Rt. 25 and alternate traffic for the last hour to relieve congestion on the Town’s secondary roads. This alternating traffic will continue for several hours while the heating fuel of transferred from the tanker involved in the crash to a new tanker.
UPDATE: Monroe Police Capt. Michael Flick said at 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday a head-on motor vehicle crash occurred on Route 25 at Northbrook Drive when a Chevrolet Malibu and a tractor trailer tanker carrying heating fuel collided.
The Monroe Police Department’s Serious Accident Investigation team is on scene investigating at this time. A preliminary investigation revealed that the operator of the Malibu cross over the center line, for reason unknown at this time, colliding with the tractor trailer, police said.
The operator of the Malibu and a passenger were trapped in the vehicle and were extricated by members of the Stepney, Monroe and Stevenson Volunteer Fire Departments.
Both occupants of the Malibu and the operator of the tractor trailer truck were transported by Monroe EMS to an area hospital with non-life threatening serious injuries.
Route 25 remains closed due to a rupture of one of the tractor trailer fuels tanks which spilled diesel fuel on the roadway. DEEP is on scene coordinating the cleaning effort.
The trailer/tanker carrying heating fuel was not compromised and is not leaking.
