Area High-School Students Awarded Scholarships

A Naugatuck resident was among six area high school students to receive a scholarship from the Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund.

WATERBURY—The Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund Inc. has awarded scholarships to six area high-school students for the 2016-17 academic year. The awards were based on several criteria, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community service.

Scholarships were awarded to Sacred Heart High School students Liliana E. Pedro of Waterbury (pictured second from left) and Taya M. Robison of Naugatuck (second from right). Photographed with the students were Memorial Fund board member WPD Det. Peter Morgan and Sacred Heart High School President Eileen Regan.

Also receiving scholarships were Holy Cross High School students Ashley L. Davis of Torrington and Natalie N. Hodak of Waterbury, and Nicole M. Alvarado of Middletown and Stephanie Felix of New Haven, both students at Mercy High School in Middletown.

The fund was established to honor the memory of late Waterbury Deputy Police Chief Christopher D. Corbett and to carry on his support of Waterbury-area Catholic schools and their students. Its signature fundraising event is a 5K run held each April at Holy Cross High School. The 2017 run is scheduled for April 2.

“We received applications from more than 100 students,” said board member Atty. F. David Corbett, who served on the scholarship committee. “All were impressive, but these applicants stood out. We are delighted to be able to assist them in achieving their educational goals.”

This year the fund also awarded scholarships to area elementary-school students, and plans are under way to offer scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year to college-bound graduates of Catholic high schools.
