Area Students Awarded Scholarships

Two Naugatuck elementary-school students were among those receiving scholarships from the Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund.

WATERBURY—The Christopher D. Corbett Memorial Fund Inc. has awarded scholarships to eight area elementary-school students for the 2016-17 academic year. The awards were based on several criteria, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community service.

Two Naugatuck residents received scholarships. Ashley Galvao (pictured with Principal John Salatto and Memorial Fund board member Joanne Corbett) attends St. Francis-St. Hedwig School in Naugatuck. Alexander Corona (pictured with board member F. David Corbett and Principal Jack Tavares) is a student at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Waterbury.

The fund was established to honor the memory of late Waterbury Deputy Police Chief Christopher D. Corbett and to carry on his support of Waterbury-area Catholic schools and their students. Its signature fundraising event is a 5K run held each April at Holy Cross High School. The 2017 run is scheduled for April 2.

“We received applications from more than 100 students,” said board member Atty. F. David Corbett, who served on the scholarship committee. “All were impressive, but these applicants stood out. We are delighted to be able to assist them in achieving their educational goals.”

This year the fund also awarded scholarships to area high-school students, and plans are under way to offer scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year to college-bound graduates of local Catholic high schools.
