City Hill to Host School Breakfast Celebration with Special Guests

Former New England Patriots Tight End Jermaine Wiggins and CT Dairy Farmer Melissa Greenbacker will visit the school to reward them for outstanding success with school breakfast.

City Hill Middle School will host a celebration in honor of the school's success with school breakfast. Since the start of their Breakfast in the Classroom initiative. City Hill has more than doubled the number of students that start their day with breakfast at school. Research shows that students who eat a healthy breakfast at school show improved academic performance, have fewer behavioral issues, improved attention span and fewer visits to the school nurse. Funding to start the City Hill Breakfast in the Classroom program was provided by the dairy farm families of Connecticut through a partnership between the Connecticut Milk Promotion Board of New England Dairy & Food Council.

On behalf of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, Connecticut Dairy Farmer Melissa Greenbacker and former New England Patriots Tight End Jermaine Wiggins will visit with the 350 seventh grade students on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 10:00am. Wiggins and Greenbacker will talk to the students about fueling up with a nutritious breakfast every day at school and the importance of being active for a least 60 minutes each day.

In 2013, Naugatuck Food Service Director Kate Murphy was recognized as a Connecticut School Breakfast Challenge award winner for her district level increase in school breakfast participation. Ms. Murphy, with the strong support of City Hill Principal Brian Hendrikson, continues to drive to help students start their day ready to learn and has since implemented the Breakfast in the Classroom program at CHMS with great success.
