Former Waterbury City Official Charged In Hit-And-Run Crash: Reports

The former chairman of the Zoning Commission has been charged in an accident that left a teen in critical condition, according to reports.

WATERBURY, CT — A former Waterbury Zoning Commission chairman was arrested on allegations that he hit a 17-year-old with his car and fled, according to NBC CT. John Egan, 58, is accused of being involved in a hit-and-run accident early Friday morning that left the teen critically injured.

Egan reportedly resigned from his commission position Tuesday.

The teen was on a scooter when struck in the area of West Main Street and Highland Avenue shortly after midnight Friday.

Police found the teen, identified as Bryan Calle, in the road, but the vehicle that struck him had taken off, according to media reports. Police later found the car, a Cadillac XT5, abandoned and took it into police custody, according to NBC CT.

Calle was transported to Connecticut Children's Medical Center. He is in critical condition and being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Egan was released on a $50,000 court-set bond. He is scheduled to appear in court June 12 and will face charges of evading responsibility causing serious physical injury or death and failure to yield while turning left, WTNH News-8 reported.

One of Calle's family members said that the teen moved to the U.S. from Ecuador four months ago. The night he was hit, he was on his way home from working at a local restaurant.

His parents are attempting to obtain visas to travel from Ecuador to be with their son, according to WTNH News-8.
