The Penny Chorus and Orchestra was founded in 2012 by Arianne Abela and Colin Britt, following the release of their first internet video, a cover of “Call Me Maybe” that went viral, with over 2.5 million views to date. Specializing in classical covers of contemporary popular songs, Penny is a volunteer ensemble made up of members from across the country. Most of the group’s 50 members are classically trained musicians who come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, including performers, students, teachers, doctors, dentists, pastors, designers, graduate students and retirees.
In 2013, Penny auditioned for “America’s Got Talent,” advancing all the way to the quarterfinals, where they performed at Radio City Music Hall in front of a televised audience of 12 million viewers. In addition to their shared goal of bringing classical music to a larger audience, they are strongly dedicated to philanthropic work, and their continued goal is to use their talents to benefit charities.
