Healthy vs. Unhealthy Dieting Trends of 2014

Happy 2014 Fitness Family! 

The New Year has approached….now what?  Diets? Workouts? Quick Fixes? Gimmicks?

I hear it all, everyday, from clients to prospective clients.  The most common quote thus far of 2014, “I want to lose weight first by dieting… AND THEN workout.”  Don’t shoot the messenger but…THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS!  I mean sure..you CAN do that, just like you CAN go on a cookie diet, you CAN go on a FAST, you CAN go on a JUICE diet or even a ‘DOCTOR RECOMMENDED DIET’.  However, doing all that WILL NOT lead you to a long-term HEALTHY lifestyle.  And that’s the goal/resolution, isn’t it?

The following article posted is about the DANGERS OF CRASH DIETING.  If it’s ‘DOCTOR RECOMMENDED’, who do you think is getting paid?  That’s right…sign up because the doc says so!  Well, the doctor just made money off of the diet you went on, using his credentials in order the SELL you.  RED FLAG: “You can’t exercise in the first few weeks of the diet”…hence CRASH diet…your body will be crashing for that period of time.  Will you lose weight?  Yes….it is called catabolism. 

Catabolism: destructive metabolism; the breaking down in living organisms of more complex substances into simpler ones, with the release of energy.  KEY WORD: Destructive. (dictionary.com)

*In the catabolic state, the body will break down some fat along with muscle because of lack of proper nutrition the body will basically deteriorate resulting in UNHEALTHY weight loss*

Moral of the story:  What a FITNESS PROFESSIONAL sells is health, no gimmicks, no crash dieting, no destruction to your body.  Health is about balance, exercise and nutrition.  Put the work in to create balance and a healthy mind, body, and spirit.  It takes work, but is worth the POSITIVE benefits for the rest of your LIFE!  Do your research on both aspects of whatever FAD you are thinking about jumping into next.  Better yet, pick up a human anatomy book and learn on the body works.  Google things like: metabolism, benefits of strength training, proper nutrition, healthy food choices, etc.  Knowledge is POWER!
