Iconic Waterbury Bakery Closes For Good: Report
The bakery first began in 1913 in New York City before moving to Connecticut in the 1920s and it expanded over the decades.
WATERBURY, CT — The long-running and popular Milite Bakery at 53 Interstate Lane in Waterbury has closed for good, the Republican-American first reported.
The closure includes Spinella and Artutro's bakeries, according to the Rep-Am. Milite Bakery began in 1932.
According to the company's website, Spinella’s Bakery opened in 1913, Arturo's in 1994 and A.M.S. Bakeries purchased Milite Bakery in 2003. A.M.S. Bakeries owned all three bakeries. In 2003 Ralph Spinella Jr. purchased Milite’s Bakery and moved Spinella and Arturo’s Bakeries into the Milite’s Bakery location.

Spinlla's Bakery was first begun by John and Matilda Spinella in New York City, and it moved to Waterbury in the 1920s, the company's website said. Ralph Spinella Jr. purchased Arturo's Bakery in 1994, and knowing he needed more space, he was approached by the then owner of Milite’s Bakery who wanted to sell and in 2003, Ralph Spinella Jr. moved all three bakeries into the Milite site on Interstate Lane.
Milite Bakery provided bread to numerous grocery stores across the region, the Rep-Am reported.

According to the company's website, A.M.S. Bakeries, LLC is a family owned business of over 100 years and is the mother company of Arturo, Milite and Spinella. We still hand make many of our breads the same way as when we started back in 1913...Our number one goal is to provide our customers with quality breads and quality service."
In a Google review, Steve Copman wrote earlier this year that he's "Been buying Milite's bread from when it was on Charles St. Got it literally fresh out of the oven drove home 1 mile away and piping hot..butter would melt in 2 seconds and simply the best Italian bread in the world at least 10 times better than Arthur Ave in Bronx NY.."
One other Google reviewer posted, "Best bread in the world."
