Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards will send the 2014 winners of best performance by an actor and best performance by an actress to New York City to compete in the National High School Musical Theater Awards' 2014 Jimmy Awards. The JimmyTM Award is named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theater owner and producer. According their website, The Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor is awarded annually to two grand prize winners selected from a group of student performers representing the participating professional theaters. Winners are selected by a panel of industry experts.The NHS Musical Theater Awards will focus national attention on the importance of theater arts education and heighten the profile of communities and school districts around the United States that provide musical theater study in their curriculum and offer student productions as part of their school activities programming. It will also recognize the regional professional theaters participating in this national awards presentation. Two winners from each local event will be eligible to participate in the New York finals competition.The nominees from Connecticut are JILLIAN CAILLOUETTE who played Sara Crewe in St. Paul Catholic High School production of A Little Princess and MICHAEL HUDAK who played Jean Valjean in Immaculate High School's production of Les Misérables. Ms. Caillouette will be attending for the second straight year. New Haven Ballet Presents The Sleeping Beauty at the Shubert Theatre
This spring, New Haven Ballet invites audiences across Greater New Haven to experience the magic of classical ballet with The Sleeping Beauty, coming to the historic Shubert Theatre on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m.
Perfect for young audiences and longtime dance lovers alike, this enchanting production brings Princess Aurora’s beloved story to life through storybook magic and the sweeping score of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Thoughtfully adapted for today’s audiences, the performance offers a welcoming introduction to ballet while keeping all the beauty and wonder that has made this fairytale a classic for generations.
The heart of this production is the dancers themselves.
Students ages 4 to 18 will take the stage after months of dedication and artistic growth, sharing a performance that celebrates not only technique, but creativity, confidence, and joy. For many young performers, it’s a meaningful milestone and a chance to experience the excitement of live theater together.
For more than 40 years, New Haven Ballet has helped young dancers grow both on and off the stage, with many students continuing on to prestigious summer intensives, conservatories, and professional dance careers.
In addition to The Sleeping Beauty, the program will feature contemporary and Broadway inspired works, along with performances by the School’s Shared Ability artists. Together, the pieces reflect New Haven Ballet’s commitment to creating a space where every dancer can learn, grow, and shine.
Artistic Director Lisa Kim shares, “This performance is a chance for our students to come together and share what they have been working toward all year. We hope it inspires everyone in the audience.”
Following the performance, children and families are invited to meet the fairies from the ballet, a magical moment younger audience members won’t soon forget.
With a running time of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission, the performance is ideal for both first time balletgoers and devoted fans of dance.
