Naugatuck Girl Scouts to Support the Local Troops With Cookies

The Girl Scouts will be selling cookies at the VFW on March 18, and residents are asked to also buy boxes of cookies that will go toward the borough's own National Guard unit serving in Afghanistan.

A group of local Naugatuck Girl Scouts is adding something special to their sale of beloved cookies this year.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 18, Girl Scout troops in Naugatuck will be selling cookies to the public at the , located on Rubber Avenue.

This isn’t uncommon, as January to March is typically the season when the famous cookies — Samoas, Thin Mints and Tagalongs just to name a few — are available for purchase.

But, residents that buy a box will also be asked to do a little something extra: buy another box for their local American troops currently serving abroad.

The effort is called "Cookies for Heroes." Through this initiative, the Girl Scouts will be filling an Army-style vehicle with donated boxes of cookies, purchased by residents and through public donations.

The cookies will then be carted away in the vehicle and eventually shipped off to Afghanistan, where they will be delivered into the hands of Naugatuck’s own , which was , said Michelle Blanc, event coordinator.

“It’s just a great way to give back to our community at the same time help the Girl Scouts raise money,” Blanc said. “Any boxes they buy will stay local.”

Blanc said she has available 100 cases of cookies to sell, with 12 boxes of cookies in each case.

Blanc said she hopes to have a military-style truck on scene, which will be used as the vehicle in the “fill-a-truck” effort.

“For the Girl Scouts this is a big honor,” Blanc said. She added, “When we go around and sell (cookies) we also ask customers to give to the troops.”

Sending boxes of cookies to the men and women in the armed forces isn’t new to the Girl Scouts. Blanc mentioned that millions of boxes of cookies have been sent over in the past three years.

But, this is the first time it's being done in Naugatuck, she said.

Blanc is also asking for a member of the armed service that may be interested in volunteering during the event, as the girls are always excited to have a member of the armed services there. Anyone interested is asked to contact her at MikeyBlanc@aol.com or by phone at 203-815-8767.
