Helen was born June 17, 1927, in Johnstown, PA, the daughter of the late John and Susan Boratko.

Helen was employed by Waterbury Hospital as a Registered Nurse for over 20 years before her retirement. She was an active member in church, volunteered at her local soup kitchen, loved to travel both home (NYC was a regular) and abroad, and had quite the sweet tooth. Helen led an active lifestyle that included tending to her own lawn and garden well into her 80s. She took great pride in her flower gardens. She will also be remembered by family for her amazing Czech recipes including kolache and haluski.

She was a very strong woman. The foundations of her strength were her faith, her family and her friends.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Edward, who passed away in 1962. She is also predeceased by her eleven siblings and parents. She is survived by two sons, whom she lovingly raised on her own after her husband’s passing, Norman (Jayne) of Barkhamsted, CT and Martyn of New Hartford, CT.
She also leaves her two granddaughters, whom she adored, Alayna Scarangelo (Tom) of Torrington, CT and Stefani Sholtis of Barkhamsted, CT. Shortly before her passing, she learned that she was going to be a great-grandmother in the Fall.
She leaves many nieces, nephews, and extended family, including a very special niece, Betty Byrne, who always made the effort to spend time with her; she loved you dearly.
Jane, Charlotte, and Mina - you all meant the world to her. You all were so special to her, and she loved you for it.

The family would like to thank Sue, the staff at Noble Horizons and Sharon Hospital for your care and compassion. Serena, you are special.
