Sharon Playhouse presents 'Come From Away'

SHARON PLAYHOUSE CONTINUES THE 2026 SEASON
WITH THE BELOVED BROADWAY HIT “COME FROM AWAY”

The Sharon Playhouse, in Connecticut’s Northwest Corner, proudly continues its 2026 MainStage Season with the Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away, running September 11 through September 27. Opening on the 25th anniversary of September 11, this deeply moving, exhilarating, and uplifting musical tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded airline passengers and the small Newfoundland community that welcomed them with extraordinary kindness in the days following 9/11. Featuring book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away is directed by Hunter Foster, with choreography by Krystyna Resavy and music direction by Eric Thomas Johnson.

One of the most celebrated musicals of the 21st century, Come From Away takes audiences to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes carrying thousands of passengers from around the world were diverted when American airspace was closed on September 11, 2001.

With their population nearly doubled overnight, the people of Gander and the surrounding communities opened their homes, schools, churches, and hearts to complete strangers—providing food, clothing, shelter, friendship, and compassion during an uncertain and frightening time.

From those extraordinary events, Come From Away creates something unexpected: a joyous and deeply human celebration of what people are capable of when they choose to take care of one another. Told by a company of 12 actors portraying dozens of characters, the musical moves at a breathtaking pace between humor and heartbreak, accompanied by an exhilarating score inspired by the traditional music of Newfoundland.

“Come From Away feels especially meaningful for us to present this year,” said Sharon Playhouse Artistic Director Carl Andress. “Twenty-five years after September 11, this extraordinary musical asks us to remember that terrible day by telling a story about the very best of humanity—the kindness of strangers, the strength of community, and our capacity to take care of one another when it matters most. And what makes the show so remarkable is that it is also incredibly funny, joyful, and full of life. I can’t imagine a more meaningful way for us to bring our MainStage season to a close.”

Come From Away opened on Broadway in 2017 and became an international phenomenon, receiving seven Tony Award nominations and winning the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. Its score includes audience favorites such as “Welcome to the Rock,” “38 Planes,” “Me and the Sky,” “Stop the World,” and “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere.”

The design team for Come From Away includes Christopher Swader and Justin Swader (scenic design), Kathleen DeAngelis (costume design), Aidan English (lighting design), Graham Stone (sound design), and Bobbie Zlotnik (wig and makeup design). Kristine Schlachter (production stage manager) and Perseis Grant (assistant stage manager) comprise the stage management team.

The 2026 season concludes in December with the 6th Annual Holiday YouthStage Production, a new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (December 11–20), adapted and directed by Andrus Nichols and Drew Ledbetter.
