Spring Arts Day Blooms at Chase Collegiate School

Students will explore mural-making, Hip Hop, pottery, jazz, comedy and more

Waterbury, CT - Chase Collegiate School will present a special Spring Arts Celebration day on Friday, April 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a variety of cultural arts activities, first-hand workshops and presentations from a diverse range of genres.

Students will participate in such workshops as the “Be Kind” Mural Installation at the Lower School entrance, facilitated by Ben's Bells, a non-profit from Arizona that seeks to spread kindness. During this workshop, students will roll, cut and shape clay pieces that will be glazed and fired before being installed in this inspirational mural outside of Camp Hall.

Other activities will include a Hip Hop class; a Bucket Band presentation with BRAVO! Bravo Waterbury!, an education program of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra; and a character design workshop focusing on the world of comic books, video games, stories and cartoons with noted illustrator Adam Miller, the co-creator of the ZombieBomb comic anthology.

Other opportunities will include a chance for students will to explore their comedic skills with Sea Tea Improv, Hartford's professional comedy company. Connecticut's Master Potter Gary O’Neil, will teach pottery techniques; Heather Whitehouse, Director of Education at the Mattatuck Museum will also offer a workshop in Encaustic, the ancient art of hot wax painting; and Albert Rivera and his internationally known jazz trio will present “The Power of a Latin Groove.”

The Highlander Theater Company will present a preview of Gypsy at 1:30 p,m., the classic vaudeville-era musical centered around the infamously rocky relationship between Mama “Gypsy” Rose and her daughters. Gypsy will take place on Saturday, April 21 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. in the Fulkerson Arts Center.

Chase Collegiate School is a co-educational, independent day school that educates children from Prekindergarten through grade 12.
