Thunder in the Valley is the Naugatuck High School Marching Band’s home competition that took place on Saturday at the new high school field. The hosting band does not take part in the competition, but they did take to the field after the other seven local high school bands had performed for an awesome exhibition performance of “Sherlock.”

The performances began promptly at 6:00 when Ryan McMahon HS came out on the field. They were followed by the band from Jonathan Law and Bethel HS. Shelton High School performed music that reminded the audience of summer nights, although the actual temperature borough was definitely more fall-like.

At intermission, members of the City Hill Middle School 8th Grade Band came out on the field to perform two patriotic numbers under the direction of Mrs. Dravis. Patrons in the stands took advantage of the concessions offered at Marty’s Place and baked goods being sold by Band Parents, but warm beverages were probably the most popular items.

After the 45 minute intermission during which it got even colder, the crowd grew to see the largest groups compete. Not surprisingly, parking was difficult. Trumbull High School Band performed their impressive show called “Shades of Blue.” Norwalk High School closed the competition with their exciting Matador Show.

The Naugatuck HS Marching Band’s exhibition was worth the wait. The band entered the field led by a group of their alumni. It featured a student portraying Sherlock Holmes chasing a culprit around the field, beautiful fall-hued silks and wonderful music. After another break waiting for the judges’ scores, all of the drum majors came out on the field led by the 19 senior members of the Naugy band. Mr. Hughes recognized each one of his seniors and posed for photos with them.

The trophies were presented by NHS Principal Jan Saam, Board of Education Chair David Heller and BOE member Scott Slauson.

The final scores:
Marching Band Class I - Jonathan Law 64.9
