NEW CANAAN, CT — The town and Norwalk's First Taxing District are in the midst of working out details to preserve the historic home at 1124 Valley Road in New Canaan, according to First Selectman Kevin Moynihan.

"They're committed to preserving the house," Moynihan told Patch and other media outlets Thursday about the more than 200-year-old house. "That was always the objective, preserving the house."

Just what those details are were not disclosed, but Moynihan said the taxing district, which owns the home and property, declined the town's offer of a right of first refusal on a sale. That refusal helped pave the way for discussions about preserving the dwelling.

The town and the taxing district have sparred over the home for years, with the two sides far apart on a purchase price, and the town threatening eminent domain to take control.

With the sides talking about preservation, that rancor might be off the table for the time being, provided the sides can agree to a course of action.

"In the near-term we have their agreement about preservation," said Moynihan.
