First Selectman Reveals Amount Town Should Get From Theft Claim

New Canaan Public Schools received insurance money from the half-million-dollar cafeteria theft. Now the town wants its cut.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Since the town pays half of the insurance premium, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan says the town should receive half of the insurance settlement funds New Canaan Public Schools received in connection with the nearly $500,000 theft from two of its cafeterias.

"My theory is the town should get half of that insurance money," said Moynihan during a press briefing Thursday in Town Hall.

While the town government and school system are separate entities, the two pay for fraud insurance, and those premiums could possibly increase as a result of the claim, which the Board of Education put in last fall and has received payment, according to Moynihan.

He added that he has not had any formal discussions with the school district about it.

Last month, sisters Joanne Pascarelli and Marie Wilson, who both worked for the school district for years, were charged in connection with the theft. Both have denied wrongdoing.
