NEW CANAAN, CT — A 55-year-old man, who New Canaan police said is homeless, was arrested Wednesday night at the soon-to-be-demolished brick barn in Mead Park, where the suspect told authorities he had been living for the past month.

Timothy James Camper was arrested at the site at about 9:30 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the locked, dilapidated structure after a witness reported seeing "someone inside the building with a flashlight."

After arriving at the scene, the officers didn't see anyone with a flashlight, and the facility's doors were secured. But after calling out for anyone inside to come out, Camper eventually opened a door and exited.

"A subsequent search of the building revealed a non-working toilet with human excrement inside of it, a makeshift bed, and bags of food, garbage and cigarette butts," wrote New Canaan police in a statement. "Camper stated he has been living inside of the building for approximately one month."

Camper was taken into custody, charged with second-degree criminal trespass and held in lieu of a $250 bond. He was scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on March 14.
