New Canaan Natural Gas Project Could Move Downtown A Year Early

A plan for the project to go into the Business District in 2020 might be moved up.

NEW CANAAN, CT — The Eversource project bringing natural gas to New Canaan could move to the downtown area this summer, a year earlier than initially scheduled, according to First Selectman Kevin Moynihan.

The specifics of the move have not yet been finalized, but Moynihan tells Patch that unlike the first phase of the project last summer, town officials hope to have more of a say in the scheduling. Last summer, the project stretched down South Avenue and other streets, often snarling traffic.

"We will be talking to Eversource to coordinate scheduling," said Moynihan Thursday. "We didn't have much involvement with the scheduling of phase one."

Eversource spokesperson Mitch Gross told Patch that the scheduling for the downtown phase is being worked out.

"Mr. Moynihan is referring to a draft schedule as we continue our gas expansion project in New Canaan," said Gross. "Our team has received comments from town officials and is currently working on a revised schedule that will have all of the details, such as which streets will be affected, and when. We’re working to have it ready in March and will certainly be communicating it as soon as it is ready to go."
