New Principal Named At New Canaan Middle School

He replaces Greg Macedo, who is retiring after 25 years as principal of Saxe Middle School.

NEW CANAAN, CT — David Gusitsch, currently assistant principal at New Canaan High School, has been named the new Principal of Saxe Middle School, replacing Greg Macedo, who is retiring after 25 years as principal of the school. Dr. Bryan Luizzi, New Canaan Public Schools Superintendent, made the announcement Wednesday.

“As we offer our thanks and gratitude for his outstanding service to New Canaan, I am honored to congratulate Greg Macedo on his retirement this year,” said Dr. Luizzi in a statement. “Greg is leaving a positive, student-centered, and lasting legacy at Saxe, and we are delighted to have promoted a candidate whose vision and leadership will sustain, nurture and enhance the strong foundation that currently exists at Saxe Middle School.”

As Principal of Saxe Middle School, David Gusitsch continues a career of working as a top administrator in high performing K-12 school districts, with each of his successive appointments expanding the range and scope of his achievements as an educator and a leader. Mr. Gusitsch most recently served as Assistant Principal of New Canaan High School, a position he has held since July 2017.
As assistant principal, Mr. Gusitsch served as the Class of 2020 grade-level administrator. Additionally, he was responsible for supervising and evaluating NCHS teachers in various departments including Science, Health & Physical Education, and Career and Technical Education. Dave was a member of the NCHS School Climate Committee, and was the school’s representative for the Crisis Advisory Board. He was also a member of the district’s Emotional Intelligence Leadership Team, communications chair of the Employee Wellness Committee, and is the New Canaan representative on the Cooperative Educational Services Leadership Institute Council.
Prior to arriving in New Canaan, Mr. Gusitsch worked as an educator and administrator in the Westport Public School District, including at Coleytown Middle School as an interim assistant principal. He also supervised 30 teachers district-wide as Westport’s health and physical education curriculum coordinator and served as department chair, where he taught health and physical education classes at Staples High School. He also served as an assistant coach for several high school teams while in Westport, including varsity football and varsity boys and girls swim teams, and he secured a $1.2 million grant to enhance and improve the district’s health and physical education programs.
Mr. Gusitsch earned an Educational Leadership degree from Sacred Heart University. He has a Master of Science in Sport Management from Western Illinois University, and a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education with Coaching from Central Connecticut State University.
Dr. Luizzi also thanks the teachers, administrators, and parents for their excellent work as the interview committee, which was comprised of 22 people overall. Additionally, he thanks Gary Kass, Director of Human Resources, and Gary’s entire staff for all of their efforts coordinating and organizing the search process. Mr. Gusitsch will begin as Principal at Saxe on July 1, 2018.
