Police Investigating Whether Newtown and New Canaan Counterfeit Money Incidents Related

In both towns counterfeit $100 bills were used to purchase gift cards at Walgreens.

New Canaan Police are investigating whether an incident in town and Newtown where counterfeit $100 bills were used to purchase gift cards are related.

The fake bills were passed at the Walgreens on Pine Street on May 9, police said. Two men in their 20’s came into the store separately and each purchased a $500 gift card. Police continue to investigate to determine if either or both of the males passed the phony cash.

Several were arrested in Newtown during a strikingly similar incident. Two men allegedly used counterfeit $100 bills to purchase gift cards at a Walgreens.

Both the men and a female driver were arrested and around $8,000 in fake bills and thousands of dollars worth of electronics was seized.

New Canaan Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said that surveillance footage is being reviewed and the Newtown arrestees will likely be interviewed.
