UNCASVILLE – A-1 Toyota of New Haven was awarded the 2022 CHEAPR Electric Vehicle Champion Award from Commissioner Katie Dykes of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) at the opening of the Connecticut International Auto Show on November 11th at the Mohegan Sun Expo Center.

The award is presented for outstanding promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) in Connecticut. The CHEAPR program offers incentives to Connecticut residents purchasing a qualified EV from a licensed new car dealership.

“On behalf of Governor Lamont, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is pleased to recognize A-1 Toyota as the 2022 CHEAPR EV Champion in Connecticut,” said DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes. “Connecticut’s dealerships are critical to helping vehicle buyers discover the benefits of driving electric and by amplifying the benefits of CHEAPR incentives, have contributed to a 200% increase in the number of EVs on our roads over the past two years, solidifying Connecticut as a regional leader in transportation electrification.”

Incentive amounts range from $4,250 to $9,500 depending on the vehicle purchased, and rebates are also available for customers purchasing used EVs. In Connecticut, there are currently over 30 eligible vehicles that qualify for the rebate. The CHEAPR program was created to help Connecticut meet its clean air and energy goals.

“We are very proud to receive this award at A-1 Toyota,” stated Stephen Wheeler, Jr., President and GM of A-1 Toyota. “We’ve followed Toyota Motor Sales as a pioneer for energy saving vehicles since 1997, making selling and promoting their sales one of our goals each of these past 25 years, and we plan to continue this mission all the years ahead of us. We are honored that the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has honored us with this acknowledgement.”

In Connecticut, as of October 2022, 8,650 vehicles were sold that met the rebate qualifications.
“Connecticut’s new car dealerships are essential to the mass adoption of electric vehicles,” stated Sarah Fryxell, President of the Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association (CARA) sponsors of the Auto Show. “The Connecticut dealerships proudly partner with DEEP’s CHEAPR program allowing more EVs to be available to a broader market of buyers.”
