8-Year-Old Boy Shot, Dies In New Haven [UPDATE]

NEW HAVEN, CT — An 8-year-old suffered a gunshot wound inside a home and later died, according to police. Police were called to the 630 Howard Ave. home around 10:40 p.m. Thursday.

Emergency responders treated the boy who had suffered a gunshot to the head, according to a police statement. He was then taken to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Police seized a loaded firearm from the home. The state Department of Children and Families and Yale Child Study Center were notified of the incident. A Yale Child Study clinician responded to the hospital to speak with the family, according to police.

Police say initial an investigation shows the death was accidental.

New Haven Police Chief Otoniel Reyes said in a statement: “We mourn the tragic loss of such a young member of our community. We ask the community to join us in keeping the family in our thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable loss, pain, and grief.”
