Police Identify New Haven Shop Owner Shot and Killed Tuesday: Update

Four people were apprehended in a separate incident, but they aren't confirmed to be connected to the shooting as of Tuesday evening.

NEW HAVEN, CT—A 21-year-old shop owner was shot and killed in the city Tuesday afternoon.

Police were dispatched around 1:36 p.m. to the EMS Smoke Shop on Ferry Street. Victim Muhanad Jawad was taken by ambulance to the hospital and was pronounced dead around 2 p.m., said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Evidence suggests robbery was not likely the perpetrator's motive.

Police were alerted to a vehicle that may have been involved. A Honda CRV recently stolen from West Hartford led police on a chase that ended with the vehicle driving into a house at 904 Quinnipiac Avenue.

Three individuals were apprehended at the scene and a fourth was apprehended shortly after, Hartman said.
