Tweed-New Haven Airport Hosts Public Info Session On Proposed Terminal Expansion Project

NEW HAVEN, CT — Saying it's part of an "ongoing commitment to community engagement and providing clear, accessible information," Tweed–New Haven Airport hosts a virtual public information session Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The session promises an overview of the Airport's proposed expansion project and the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection environmental review process on that project.

The decision to have the session virtual was informed by "weather conditions and out of an abundance of caution for public safety," according to a news release. "We recognize that not all residents have access to virtual meeting tools, and we will host an in-person session in East Haven in April covering the same material. The date will be announced later this week."

"The session is intended to help community members understand what to expect during the application process and how the public can meaningfully engage as the review moves forward," a news release from airport operator Avports.

In addition to the airport team, representatives from CT DEEP will participate in the session to explain the environmental review process and respond to questions related to this phase of review, it's noted

"Our responsibility is to provide accurate, straightforward information about how the environmental review works and what role the public plays," said Michael Jones, CEO of The New HVN. "This session is an important first step in that process and part of our broader commitment to ongoing dialogue with the community."

According to Avports and HVN, the session "will focus exclusively on explaining the CT DEEP application process and opportunities for public participation."

"It will not address the merits of the application or specific concerns related to the project," the airport pointed out. There's been no shortage of opposition to the planned expansion. "Those topics will be covered in future public meetings as part of the broader review and engagement process," Avports said.

Meeting won't address "merits" of the project, rather just info on expansion plan and its environmental assessment, Avports said.

“This community informational session is about making sure our neighbors clearly understand the process that governs this project and how important their attendance and participation are,” said Robert Reed, Chairman of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority. “We believe transparency and accessibility are essential, particularly during formal environmental review, and this session is designed to explain what that process looks like and what comes next.”

This session is informational only and is not a required part of the CT DEEP permitting process. The meeting will include a Q&A segment to allow community members to ask questions and receive information. It is not a formal public hearing, and comments for or against the project will not be entered into the official record.
