Want The Best Italian Food In CT? Check Out These Restaurants

NEW HAVEN, CT — Everyone knows that if you want to chow down on Italian food, Connecticut is a good place to go. The state has a rich Italian history and plenty of eateries offering everything from pasta to calzones to cannolis.

The Daily Meal recently searched the country for the best Italian restaurants in each state. Two New Haven restaurants made the list: Sally's Apizza and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.

Pepe's was listed at #12 with Sally's coming in at #19.

Number one on the list was Quince, an upscale San Francisco eatery that's attained three Michelin stars. It'll cost you a bit more than the humble New Haven pizzeria's, as the restaurant's 10-course seasonal tasting menu costs a cool $298.

"Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana is one of the American restaurants you simply need to visit," the article reads. "The New Haven icon opened in 1925, and when it moved into a new space next door shortly thereafter it became (at the time) the largest pizzeria in America. The pizzas here are perfect examples of the New Haven regional style: oblong, charred (it's a good thing, trust us), thin-crusted, chewy and coal-fired. "

On Sally's, The Daily Meal says, "The tomato pie here (tomato sauce, no cheese) is a work of art, and the pie topped with mozzarella and thinly sliced potato and onion is also a masterpiece. Like other New Haven pizza joints, this is one of those rare tourist trap restaurants even the locals love."

This is hardly the first recognition that the rival pizza joints have earned. Pepe's landed on a list of the best restaurants in the country recently.

Pepe Pizzeria currently has 11 locations serving its signature thin-crust pizza in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York.

Sally's has previously appeared on The Daily Meal's list of best pizzerias. The restaurant recently announced that it will be open seven days a week.
