Newington Obituary: Christine DePatie, 90

Condolences to her family and friends.

Christine P. DePatie, beloved mother and Nana, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Avery Heights Senior Living Facility in Hartford. She was 90 years old. Chris and her late husband William J. DePatie resided in Newington and were long-time summer residents of Standish, ME.

Christine was born in Ansonia on October 30, 1927, the daughter of Niels Poulsen and Charlotte Kneen Pouslen. She graduated from Milford High School and received both a BA and an MSW in Social Work from the University of Connecticut, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Chris married Bill in April 1951. They moved to Newington in 1954 where they raised their three children. Chris was a stay-at-home mother for many years, during which time she was a member of the Newington Garden Club and acted as Troop Leader for her daughters' Brownie and Girl Scout troops. She was an active member of the Church of Christ, Congregational, in Newington, where she taught Sunday School, helped organize the annual church fair, served on the Board of Deacons, and several other committees over the years.

Chris returned to social work in 1968 when she joined the staff at New Britain General Hospital as a medical social worker. She loved her work, and stayed there until she retired in 1994.

Chris and Bill spent their retirement years enjoying their friends, hobbies, and volunteer work. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren at their summer home on Sebago Lake in Maine. Chris and Bill were married for 58 years before his death in 2009.

She is survived by her three children, Karen Jardine and husband Carl of Longmont, CO; Dr. Susan DePatie and husband Jeff Gerhart of Standish, ME; and William J. DePatie Jr. and wife Gloria of Hopkinton, MA; seven grandchildren, Alyssa and Alex Jardine, Evan and Alexander Ostapiuk, and Jessica, Jennifer, and Nicholas DePatie; eleven nieces and nephews and fifteen grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to her husband, Chris was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Scalzi, and brother-in-law, Leonard Scalzi.

The funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ, Congregational, 1075 Main St, at 1:00 on Sunday, March 4th. A graveside ceremony will follow the service behind the church in Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of Christ, Congregational Memorial Fund, or to a charity of one's choice.
