4 Displaced By Fire At New London Multi-Family Building

NEW LONDON, CT — Four people were displaced following a fire at a multi-family home in New London on Monday.

Firefighters responded to a report of a single-alarm blaze at 896 Bank St. at 4:32 p.m.

The fire had broken out on the second floor of the building. Firefighters used a hose line to extinguish the fire.

A smoke alarm alerted residents to the fire. No injuries were reported. However, smoke damage to the second-floor apartment caused it to be not habitable.

Four people were displaced and have been relocated by the American Red Cross.

The fire marshal's office determined the cause of the fire to be "improper disposal of smoking materials, which were thrown into a trash container and ignited nearby combustibles," according to fire officials.

"The New London Fire Department reminds residents that smoking materials must be disposed of properly to prevent accidental fires," fire officials said in a statement. "Cigarettes and other smoking materials should always be fully extinguished and placed into a non-combustible container, such as a metal can or approved ashtray."
