5 Displaced Following Fire At New London Apartment Building

At least five people have been displaced after a fire damaged a New London apartment building early Thursday morning.

NEW LONDON, CT — Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at an apartment building in New London early Thursday morning, according to a statement from the fire department. The call came in as a report of smoke in an apartment at 212 Montauk Ave. at 12:27 a.m.

The fire was located on the second floor of a three-story mixed occupancy building. Firefighters knocked down the fire in about 20 minutes, but were fighting the blaze for over an hour, chasing hidden pockets of fire in void spaces and in the attic.

There were no injuries to those in the building. One firefighter was treated at the scene for fire debris in his eye.

At least five tenants of the building were relocated by the Red Cross. The fire is under investigation by the New London Fire Marshal’s Office.
