7/13-7/17,
 1-4p Students ages 9–12 will build and decorate their own cardboard 
boats while learning basic design and maritime skills.
Set sail with creativity. New London Community Boatworks is partnering with Spark Makerspace for a fun, hands-on cardboard boat-building class for students ages 9-12.
In this class, young builders will
 create their own 2-foot-long cardboard boats while learning about 
reading plans, measurement, construction, and maritime traditions. After building, participants will paint and decorate their boats, bringing their imaginative designs to life.
We are also hoping to showcase the finished boats at the Connecticut Maritime History Festival on September 12th.
All materials are included.
Parents/guardians will be contacted by email before class to complete required paperwork.
This class is made possible by the support of The Dime Bank Foundation and Charter Oak Federal Credit Union.

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut welcomes the public to an Open House on Wednesday, July 15th, to celebrate their new office location at One Bailey Circle, New London. 
Sarah Lufler, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity, credits community volunteers, Habitat homeowners gaining sweat equity, and corporate and nonprofit organizations donating their time to construction for making the move to the new building possible. “More than 50 volunteers gave over 750 hours of construction labor to the Bailey Circle remodel to help make this happen,” Lufler notes, “Habitat’s new headquarters involves much more than a change of address. It signals the growth of our organization and reflects the critical need for affordable homeownership in Eastern Connecticut. One Bailey Circle will be the place families seeking housing stability will begin their journey.” 
One Bailey Circle formerly housed Sun Turtle Office Furniture. Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut was located at 377 Broad Street for over three decades prior to a 2-year move to the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT’s Regional Innovation Center. It was the goal of the organization to build a functional and accessible space for future Habitat families and to serve the community and housing continuum well into the 21st
century.
Area residents, members of the business community, local officials, prospective homeowners and others are encouraged to attend the Open House for a chance to tour the building and learn more about the Habitat mission.

 class is aimed at the complete woodshop novice. Students will build a 
laminated wooden mallet using oak and epoxy. At the end of the class,

 and print a single-color linocut print of your own design! Features an 
introduction to the printing press (certification for members)
This beginner-friendly class is
 an introduction to the relief process, the technique used in the oldest
 forms of printmaking. By creating a single-color linocut print, you 
will learn the basics of relief printing. We will explore types of 
carving blocks, inks, and papers, and you will learn how to prepare your
 carving block, transfer your design, and carve and ink the block. You 
will make several prints, both by handprinting and using the printing 
press. (After this class, members will be certified to use the press for
 relief printing.)
Please read through the relief printing handout (found<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZIdbivWF_zVy7_nQBSp9lS8wLMfvIbBH/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"> here</a>) before class, and bring a simple design no larger than 5x8 inches. A good beginner design has a bold image, thick lines, and no fine details.
 Keeping it simple will help you avoid frustration and allow you to 
focus on the fundamentals of printmaking. You can find some great ideas 
by searching for free black and white vector art. Several design options
 will also be available to choose from in class.
Certification for Members: Printing Press&nbsp;
Members who demonstrate proper use of the printing press can be certified for independent access to the tool.

The Arts and Crafts Movement that began in mid-19th century England was a bold expression of frustration with increasing industrialization and mass production.&nbsp; Likewise, as we approach the mid-21st century, tensions surrounding the environment, health, trade, AI, and job issues, among other things, has begun to dampen hyper-consumerism and the embrace of the disposable. In times of stress such as these, people seek comfort and connection; meaningful local consumption has an opportunity to replace a throw-away society.&nbsp;&nbsp; The emphasis on the value of sustainability in production has presaged this more tumultuous moment in time. There has also been a growing emphasis on “going small,” or owning fewer items of higher quality. But the social, political, economic, and environmental disturbances of our time are leading to a deeper search for meaning. Embracing community is essential in times of stress. Community provides a critical sense of belonging and identity that can keep anxieties related to larger sociocultural issues at bay. A crafts guild, like a local association, is intended to mold itself around the needs of a local community. The Old Lyme Guild of Arts and Crafts of the 1930s, for example, stated that its raison d’etre was to “provide beautiful and well-made items for the local population so that they would not have to search further afield.” The Lyme Artisans Guild likewise feels the pressure to step up in these challenging times and be a source for meaningfully produced and fairly-priced functional items of the highest quality. Unlike large corporation, we encourage consumer engagement with both our process and our persons; our handmade goods come with stories of origin and construction that we are excited to share. Built in the mid-1700s as a functioning livestock farm, Deans Mill Farm has gone through an evolution in recent decades. A full renovation of the historic buildings and rejuvenation of the surrounding 70+ acres has made the property into the incredible venue it is today. Deans Mill Farm now operates primarily as a private event space and five-room bed and breakfast tucked down a private road in Stonington, Connecticut.
