Bears swept in last regular softball game, compete in track and field invitational
The Coast Guard Academy dropped the final two games of its regular softball season to Babson College and also participated in a track and field invitational. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:
Softball: Babson 8, Coast Guard 4; Coast Guard 13, Babson 8
Babson hit seven home runs with three players each going deep twice as the Beavers swept a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from Coast Guard and moved all the way up to the second seed for the conference tournament winning the opener 8-4 and completing the sweep with a 13-8 win in game two.
The Beavers improved to 23-16 overall and finish conference play with a 10-6 record while Coast Guard drops to 20-16 overall and end 8-8 in the NEWMAC.
Coast Guard will be the sixth seed and play third seeded Wellesley on Tuesday at Babson at 2:30 pm with the winner playing #2 Babson at 4:30 p.m. in the double elimination tournament.
In the opener, Junior Catie Funk hit a three-run homer in the third as the Beavers took a 3-0 lead. Coast Guard got two back in the fourth on a two-run shot by freshman Chloe Harmon.
Babson scored three more in the fifth as Funk ripped two-run double and senior Nicole Latini followed with an RBI single for a 6-2 lead.
The Beavers added two insurance runs in the seventh as junior Jackie Enos led off with a homer and sophomore Kelly King added an RBI single to make the score 8-2.
Coast Guard scored twice in the home half on an RBI double by senior Maddie Buchert, who then came around on an RBI ground out by junior Holli Bastinck to close the scoring.
Sophomore Tess Rubega (10-4) got the win in relief as she worked 3 2/3 innings allowing five this and two runs, both earned, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Coast Guard senior All-American Hayley Feindel (13-7) took the loss. She went six innings allowing seven hits and six runs, three earned, while not walking a batter and striking out ten.
Funk was 2 for 3 with five RBI’s while senior Kayla Davis added two hits and scored a pair of runs in the game one win for Babson.
Buchert was 3 for 3 while sophomore Devin Fellman had two hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, Funk was 4 for 4 with a solo homer and four runs scored while
King and sophomore Sam Pilkington had a pair of homer and finished with three hits each to lead the Beavers.
Babson scored five runs in the third on a two-run homer by Pilkington and a three-run blast by King before adding five more in the fourth as Pilkington hit another two-run homer, junior Ashleigh Phelps had a two-run single and sophomore Christa Shorette was robbed of a homer by center fielder Kaitlin Ward and settled for a sacrifice fly to give the Beavers a 10-0 lead.
Sarwinski had a two-run double in the fourth to get the Bears on the board, but a two-run homer by Kings in the fifth made the score 12-2.
Coast Guard had a five-run fifth with Harmon and Sarwinski hitting back-to-back homers, Harmon’s was a grand slam and the Bears trailed 12-7.
Funk homered in the top of the seventh before Ward homered in the bottom of the seventh to close the scoring.
Freshman Jesse Richardson had three hits and scored a pair of runs in game two for Coast Guard while Sarwinski had two hits and three RBI’s.
Freshman Meghan Hayes (6-4) was the winning pitcher as she started and then came back to get the final two outs. She worked a total of four innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out two.
Junior Catherine Walker (7-9) went the distance and took the loss for Coast Guard.

Track and Field
The Coast Guard's men's track and field team won four events and took second in four others as the Bears placed second at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College.
UMass Dartmouth won with 175 points while Coast Guard finished the 12 team field with 156 points.
Senior Trevor Siperek won the 5,000 meters (14:53.81) to qualify for the All-New England Championships, freshman Ben Hannon won the 400 meters (49.86) with a career-best time, senior Myles McCarthy won the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:13).
Sophomore Ben Wolhaupter won the pole vault (14-9) while junior teammates Ian Sankey (12-9) and Zach Speck (10-9.5) were second and third and freshman Christian Von Stralendorff (10-9.5) was fourth in the event.
Junior Will Baker was second in the discus with a throw of 142 feet, 11 inches while sophomore Bryan Ayotte took second in the shot put (44-4.25).
Also for the Bears, senior Joe Hill was third in the 5,000 meters (15:39.02), sophomore Jordan Lee was third in the 800 meters (1:57.60), Hannon was third in the 200 meters (23.03), freshman Joel MacArthur was third in the javelin (170-09), sophomore Thomas Bondurant was third in the hammer (146-2) qualifying for the Division III New England Championships.
The Bears 4x800 relay team of freshman Ryan Hub, freshman Zack Kearney, senior Trevor Auth and Lee placed second with a time of 8:10.16.

In the women's competition, Freshman Kyle Sutschek won the discus with a career-best throw of 124 feet, four inches while sophomore Brandy Lowary won the high jump with a career-high leap of five feet, one inch.
Also for the Bears, junior Gina Caylor won the pole vault (9-0.25), sophomore Hannah Seeland was second in the hammer with a career-best throw of 135 feet, one inch.
Sophomore Emily Trudeau was second in the shot put (36-11.75) and third in the discus (115-5).
Freshman Beth Gollin ran a career-best and was third in the 5,000 meters (18:51.27) and sophomore Elizabeth Flint was third in the triple jump (33-8) and junior Maddie Ede was third in the pole vault (8-0.5).
UMass Dartmouth won with 121 points, Conn. was second with 117.33 while the Bears finished the 13-team invitational with 105 points in third place.
