Coast Guard Academy Sports Roundup

The Coast Guard Academy stayed alive in a softball tournament on Saturday with a win over Wellesley College while the track and field teams competed in the NEWMAC Championship. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Softball: Coast Guard 5, Wellesley 2

Junior Holli Bastinck’s two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth inning as sixth-seeded Coast Guard rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat third-seeded Wellesley 5-2 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament elimination game.

The Bears improve to 23-17 on the season and will play at top-seeded Springfield in the losers bracket bracket final next Saturday at noon. The winner will need to beat second-seeded Babson twice to win the championship.

Coast Guard trailed 2-0 after Wellesley struck twice in the home half of the fifth. The Bears got on the board in the sixth as freshman Jesse Richardson singled, Bastinck walked and sophomore Kaitlin Ward was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Chloe Harmon delivered a single to left which scored Richardson, but pinch runner freshman Kelsey Gray was thrown out at the plate and Wellesley kept the lead at 2-1.

Down to their final three outs, junior Stacia Sarwinski hit a shot off the top of the center field fence, just missing a game tying homer and settling for a lead off double. Senior Jamie Kim bunted pinch runner junior Summer Dupler to third and Dupler scored on a ground out to the pitcher, making a great slide to just beat the tag tying the game 2-2.

In the eighth, sophomore Devin Fellman was placed on second as part of the international tie breaker. Senior Maddie Buchert bunted and reached as the throw to get Fellman at third was late. Richardson then reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases before Bastinck’s two-run single. Harmon added another RBI single, her second in as many innings, to close the scoring.

Senior All-American Hayley Feindel (16-8), who earlier in the day moved into second place on the NCAA Division III all-time wins list picked up the 119th win of her career, just one shy of tying the Division III all-time mark. She allowed nine hits, all singles, while walking one and striking out one while also setting the NCAA Division III record with 149 career starts.

Harmon and Bastinck each had three hits for the Bears who had eight hits in the victory.

Track and Field

Senior Kevin O’Brien earned All-conference honors with a second place finish in the 10,000 meters posting a time of 32:17.98 as Coast Guard placed fifth at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship at Smith College.

Will Baker also placed second with a throw of 44.32 meters in the discus to earn All-conference honors for the Bears.

Jordan Lee was fourth in the 800 meters (1:57.28), Joe Hill was sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:47.99), John-Anthony Ceruti was fourth in the 400 hurdles (59.70) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (16.40).

Stephen Horvath placed fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:42.31) while the Bears 4x400 relay team of Kelcey Smith, Lee, Joe Kelly and Ben Hannon took third with a time of 3:27.41.

MIT won with 267 points while Coast Guard finished with 81 points, one point behind fourth place Wheaton.

In the women's competition, Emily Trudeau won the shot put as Coast Guard placed seventh at the NEWMAC Championship.

Trudeau won the shot put with a throw of 11.44 meters, Kyle Sutschek was second in the discus (37.38 meters) to earn All-conference honors.

Beth Gollin was seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:52.86), Kendall Auth was seventh in the 5,000 meters (19:50.07) and Abby Bishop was eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.44).

The Bears 4x100 relay team of Brandy Lowary, Elizabeth Baumsteiger, Julia Mundy and Natasha Hope placed seventh with a time of 54.18.

The Bears 4x400 relay team of Baumsteiger, Maddie Ede, Annie Schneider and Sarah Hohenberger also placed seventh posting a time of 4:23.34.

MIT won with 208 points while Coast Guard finished with 42 points.
