CT's Dictionary: Words Only Known by Nutmeg State Residents

If you're not from Connecticut, this writer says you won't know what these words mean.

Every region has its own language. The South has “bless her heart.” The East has “wicked.” And don’t even get us started on the many different ways to say sandwich.

Here in Connecticut, we have our own unique language. If you don’t live within the borders of the nutmeg state, BuzzFeed says you’re going to be a little confused.

The social news and entertainment website posted a Connecticut-centered list titled “21 Words You Don’t Actually Understand Unless You’re From Connecticut.”

Here’s a sampling of chatter BuzzFeed says is unique to the nutmeg state.

  • Mystic: A little mysterious and a little magical. Unless you’re from Connecticut and then it means you’re going to check out the Seaport and Aquarium.
  • The Sound: What’s that noise? If you live in the nutmeg state, it’s the sound of eight million people who live in the Long Island Sound watershed. It’s the sound of beaches, fishing, swimming and nesting areas for plant and animal life.
  • Whalers: If the first thing you think of is the book “Moby Dick,” you’re definitely not from Connecticut. If you think about nights spent stamping your feet while sitting in a cold hockey rink, you know your nutmeg-state-stuff.
  • Fairfield County: Must be a regional round-up of towns in a state, right?

“What people from Connecticut know it means: dollar dollar bills, y’all,” BuzzFeed writes. “I mean, there’s a reason they filmed Stepford Wives here…”

  • Dunkin’ Donuts: You know the tagline, America Runs on Dunkin’? That may be a true statement, but people in California will have to run an awfully long distance to get coffee — they only have two Dunkin’ Donuts in their state.

And if you live in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota or Minnesota, you’re going to have to run to another state to get a cup of joe.

Here in Connecticut, we’re quite familiar with Dunkin’ Donuts — there are 508 in the state.

So nutmeggers, what do you think about the list? Did BuzzFeed miss any East Coast exclamations?
