Travelers on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge may have recently witnessed something unusual.

NEW LONDON, CT – A group of aviation experts from the Department of Transportation tested a drone Tuesday over the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, The Day reported.

The DOT was looking to see if the the unmanned aerial vehicle could be used to assist with bridge inspections, according to The Day. The device was able to record high definition photos and video of a column on the northbound side of the bridge.

The drone’s documentation will be compared to a conventional inspection of the bridge, according to The Day. If successful, the technology could be used to improve bridge inspections.
