Don McLean, Art Jams Big Bang, and Little Theatre Of The Deaf

This morning’s lousy weather might be making a comeback tonight, but that’s not such a bad thing for music fans. It means the summer concert series at Harkness Memorial State Park is sending tonight’s performer to the backup location of the , and it’s a big one tonight: Don McLean, best known for “American Pie,” is visiting southeastern Connecticut as part of a 40th anniversary world tour. The Meadows Brothers Band as well as Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez open for McLean; tickets for the 5:30 p.m. show at $24 in advance or $30 at the door, and doors open at 4 p.m.

If the weather holds off, you’ll have a chance to check out ’s Summer Flicker series, which shows the Steve Martin comedy The Jerk at 8 p.m. tonight. There are plenty of other film opportunities available this coming week as well. The hosts a showing and discussion of the documentary at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The will have a free showing of The Hunger Games at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, while the shows The Lion King at 2:30 p.m. on the same day.

As for other music, you can always catch a performer at the Field of Greens Farmers Market, running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. The same evening, you can also see The Rivergods at 6:30 p.m. at and Ticket to Ride, a Beatles tribute band, at 8 p.m. at ; the latter show includes a fireworks display as well as a $5 parking charge. Hygienic Art Park’s Saturday shows continue with Jim Carpenter and the Hoolios as well as Full Moon Jamboree; the bands take the stage at 7 p.m., and there is a $10 suggested donation. And as always, the Jazz Trio brings some tunes to every Monday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

In the art world, the concludes with a on Saturday as all of the participating artists come together for one last day of hands-on activities; this runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Little Theatre of the Deaf comes to Hygienic Art Park at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday to put on six performances. The troupe will return at the same times on Tuesday and Aug. 26, and admission is free.

Finally, from now until Sunday several downtown merchants are participating in the Open House benefit. A portion of purchases at these businesses will go toward the New London Education Fund of the .
