Errors Cost Coast Guard Academy Baseball Game

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy capitalized on errors by the Coast Guard Academy baseball team to win a Thursday game, while the Bears' men's tennis team defeated Roger Williams University. The following information was provided by Jason Southard, sports information director at the Coast Guard Academy:

Baseball: Mass. Maritime 10, Coast Guard 7

Freshman Peter Sheppard was 4 for 5 with three doubles and four RBI’s and Mass. Maritime scored five unearned runs in the seventh for a come-from-behind 10-7 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game.

Coast Guard led 6-2 after five innings, but the Bucs got a run in the sixth on a double play ground out before scoring five times in the seventh. Sophomore Bob Lee’s RBI ground out scored freshman Bobby Rosano, who led off with a single. Senior William Shouldice’s infield single scored sophomore Devin Rudolph, who bunted and reached on an error to make the score 6-5. Shouldice scored on an error to tie the game before Sheppard lifted a fly ball to left field with two outs which the outfielder lost in the sun resulting in a two-run double and an 8-6 lead.

The Bucs added single runs in the both the eighth and ninth on a sacrifice fly by Lee in the eighth and an RBI double by Sheppard in the ninth.

The Bears broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double by sophomore Dave Wolinski in the third inning before Coast Guard scored three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Mike Shannon scoring junior Joe Petry, who led off the inning with a double. Wolinski then added his second two-run double of the game for a 6-2 lead.

Coast Guard starter junior Derek Petty pitched six solid innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out three. Freshman Anthony Martin (1-4), took the loss as he worked two innings and allowed four hits and six runs, all unearned.

Sophomore Chris Gallagher (4-3) worked the middle three innings and got the win for Mass. Maritime. Gallagher allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Freshman Zacary Cooney pitched the final three innings and allowed two hits and an earned run while walking one and fanning two to pickup his team-leading fifth save of the season.

Freshman Thomas Notarangelo started for the Buccaneers and went three innings allowing four hits and three earned runs with two walks and one strikeout.

Rosano and sophomore Brendan O’Kane each had three hits for Mass. Maritime which improves to 11-13 on the season.

Coast Guard junior Nolan Gallagher had three hits including the 100th of his career in the loss while junior Tyler Babkiewich, Shannon and Wolinski each had two hits for the Bears, who drop to 12-21 overall.

Men's Tennis: Coast Guard 7, Roger Williams 2

Coast Guard swept the three doubles matches and won four singles matches to beat Roger Williams 7-2 in a non-conference match.

The Bears improve to 10-4 with the win while Roger Williams dips to 7-7 on the season.

Nick Martin and Greg Mitchell earned an 8-2 win at #1, while Josh Fischer and Blake Maurer won 8-1 at #2 doubles. Matt Faha and John Lightner won 9-7 at #3 doubles.

Mitchell won 6-2, 6-3 at #1 singles, Fischer won 7-5, 6-4 at #2 singles, Nick Martin dropped the first set 6-2 before winning 6-4, 11-9 at #3 singles and Blake Maurer won 6-4, 6-3 at #4 singles for the Bears.
