Architectural Masterpieces of Another Kind
(New London) Cedar Grove Cemetery, was established as the city’s fourth burial place in 1851. The beautiful site was selected by a dedicated group of citizens after an extensive search. On Sunday, October 16, New London Landmarks is having a tour of the cemetery led by Bill Peterson, Curator Emeritus of Mystic Seaport.
The guided tour will begin at 2:00 pm and the cost for members is $25; non-members $30. Phone 860-442-0003 or online: newlondonlandmarks.org
This year is the 150th anniversary of the tragedy of the Civil War and many veterans of that terrible conflict are buried in Cedar Grove. Bill Peterson will review Civil War history as the tour leads past some of these memorials. There are also fine family monuments to many of New London’s most prominent citizens. The city’s long history as a maritime center is reflected in other monuments, all in an array of architectural styles reflecting their history and a message from the past to the present. It will be a fascinating walk into New London’s past, along beautiful rolling hills and fine old trees.
