“Bible for a New Age: Di Algemeyne Entsiklopedye and the Exile of Yiddish”

Lecture with guest speaker Professor Barry Trachtenberg, University at Albany – SUNY, will speak on the creation of a Yiddish-language encyclopedia. Scholars and activists overseeing the encyclopedia have stayed committed to their project for more than three dozen years.  The original goal of transmitting general knowledge gave way to new priorities that included documenting the Nazi Holocaust, memorializing the Jewish world that had been destroyed, and considering the potential of continuing Jewish life in new centers, 4:30 p.m., Charles Chu Reading Room, Charles E.
