NEW LONDON, CT — A 200-megawatt wind farm to be built off the coast of New London has been proposed by Eversource Energy and Danish company Orsted, according to media reports. Plans for the Constitution Wind project were announced Monday by the two companies.

According to the New Haven Register, the proposed wind farm would be built in federal waters 65 miles off the coast of New London. It would be the first offshore wind project to serve Connecticut.

Company officials said the world's first offshore wind farm was built by Orsted in 1991, according to the the New Haven Register. The project will compete with other projects for long-term power supply contracts, following a request from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in December.
