Fill The Spot: 38 Green Street

I recently went to an art opening at the Kitchen Gallery, New London's newest art space, at 140C Green Street. In speaking with Mattias Lundblad, a photographer and one of the gallery owners, I mentioned that Green Street has a certain vitality to it that is always good to see on side streets. The gallery took over the former kitchen space of , and Native Boards has brought a skateboard shop back to the building at 15 Green Street. The and offer more variety to the area.

One large space remains unoccupied, however. The building at 38 Green Street, on the corner with Golden Street, has a significant first floor space and is currently being listed by Pequot Commercial Real Estate Services. The company says the building is in the central business district, has 8,784 square feet of space, marble staircases, and a 15 car parking lot. Their asking price for the three-story structure, which includes upper level apartments, is $234,900.

The structure was built in 1920, and once contributed to the city's religious community as the New London Spiritualist Temple. Other businesses at the site included Maxwell Budget Office Furniture and a number of smaller offices. The building still bears the label of the Oasis Center, which along with the organization First Step offered rehabilitation, life skills, and other programs for low income people with mental illnesses. The organization, now part of , found the building inadequate for its needs and eventually moved to a location on upper Bank Street.
