Former NY Giant To Speak Out Against Addiction In New London

A former player for the New York Giants will be speaking out about addiction this week in New London.

NEW LONDON, CT - Former NFL wide receiver Bobby Johnson, 55, will be speaking out about addiction this week in Southeastern Connecticut. During his three-day stay in the state, the former New York Giant will be speaking in Groton, Stonington and New London.

During his time with the Giants, Johnson played with famed quarterback Phil Simms and was instrumental in the team's journey toward winning the 1987 Superbowl. He has also been clean for a number of years after struggling with a crack cocaine addiction that cost him his football career.

Johnson will first be speaking at a Community Speaks Out family support group meeting Wednesday, according to the group's Facebook page. The event will take place at the Groton Public Library at 6 p.m.

Birdseye Cafe in New London will host Johnson during a special steak dinner event Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost is only $25, and those in attendance will have an opportunity to meet the athlete himself.

Johnson will additionally speak to students at New London High School about prevention Thursday morning, and to people in treatment/recovery at Stonington Institute later that afternoon, according to the New London Day. He will also be speaking at both Lebanon Pines and Connecticut College on Friday.
