Group Hoping To Protect Columbus Statue In New London

A local group is hoping to protect a statue of Christopher Columbus in New London and restore his namesake holiday to school calendars.

NEW LONDON, CT - Amid national debates regarding public statues of historical figures, a local group is hoping to protect a statue of Christopher Columbus in New London, according to the New London Day. The group is being led by local conservative talk show host Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh.

Hopkins-Cavanagh recently held an event she called a “Stand for Columbus" at her home Monday, the New London Day reported. The group is demanding the city both appraise and legally protect the statue. In addition to keeping the statue safe, the group has also issued a demand that the city restore Columbus Day to the school calendar, according to the New London Day. Last year, the school district replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day.
