Local Students Win Comcast Leaders, Achievers Scholarships
Students from New London, Waterford, Old Lyme and Old Saybrook were awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
HARTFORD - State Senator Paul Formica joined Comcast at the State Capitol on June 5 to recognize four local student scholars receiving the statewide Leaders & Achievers Scholarship and Comcast Founders Award.
According to a news release, Erin Patten of Waterford, Kevin Ruiz of New London, Emma Sked of Old Lyme and Christopher Thomson of Old Saybrook were each awarded a $1,000 Leaders & Achievers Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to students who strive to achieve their full potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools and who serve as models for their fellow students.

“It is wonderful to see these students recognized for their hard work and commitment to education and community,” Formica said in a release. “Erin, Kevin, Emma and Christopher should all be very proud of what they have accomplished. I know they have very bright futures ahead of them and I am glad to see these well-deserved scholarships help them further their education. Congratulations to all!”
Out of all 44 statewide recipients, Ruiz was also chosen to receive the Comcast Founders Scholarship, which awards one Connecticut student an additional $9,000. The Founders Scholarship honors the legacy of Comcast founder Ralph Roberts and his commitment to community service.

“Our $10,000 scholarship winner is somebody who has demonstrated incredible leadership and dedication to their school, their peers and their community,” Comcast Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs and Community Impact Dan Glanville said in a release.
Ruiz attends New London High School and will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall and majoring in electrical engineering.
