Man Attempts Burglary, Escapes Hospital, Assaults Officer: New London Police

The man was eventually captured after being Tased, according to police.

At 12:36 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, New London police were sent to investigate an attempted burglary that just occurred at 57 Montauk Ave.

When police arrived, a witness pointed to the suspect, later identified as 22-year-old William Carilli of 463 Root Rd., Coventry, walking away from the scene, according to New London Deputy Chief Peter Reichard.

Police stopped Carilli and during the investigation it was determined that he was allegedly attempting to break into the residence and was arrested.

While at the hospital waiting to be treated, Carilli escaped from police custody and led officers on a foot chase through the south end of the city, according to Reichard.

Waterford and state police sent officers to assist in the search.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., a Waterford police officer spotted Carilli and gave chase and caught him.

A struggle ensued and Carilli allegedly struck the officer several times in the head with a blunt object, sending the officer to the hospital with lacerations and contusions to the head, Reichard said in a press release.

Carilli was apprehended a short time later by a Connecticut state trooper in the backyard of a residence on Ocean Avenue.

“Carilli again fought police trying to escape and had to be tasered to be brought under control,” Reichard said.

He was additionally charged with assault on a police officer, assault in the second degree, resisting arrest, trespassing in the third degree, breach of peace and escape from custody.

Carilli was held at New London Police Headquarters on a bond of $250,000 and was presented in New London Superior Court on Thursday, Sept. 4.
