Massive Development Planned For Blighted Area Of New London
A developer is pitching an ambitious, three-building project that "would remove several blighted and dilapidated buildings."
NEW LONDON, CT — A developer is planning to build a 230-unit residential project in New London, according to documents filed with the city.
SREP NL Holding LLC has applied for a special permit and site plan review for the project at 150, 152 and 162 Howard St. and 65 and 77 Hamilton St. A public hearing is requested for the Planning and Zoning Commission's May 7 meeting.
Last year, the developer applied for a zone change to those properties to facilitate redevelopment.

"This project would remove several blighted and dilapidated buildings, including the former Miner Alexander Lumber Mill, and elevate Hamilton Street to allow for much needed new housing in this area of the city," according to a letter from the developer's representative.
Plans call for three residential buildings on 3.92 acres of land. One of those will be a five-story building with 90 units; another will be a two-story building with six units; and the third will be a six-story building with 140 units.

The apartments will be a mix of efficiency and one-, two- and three-bedroom units.
The development will also include 14,810 square feet of amenity space for residents with a pool and a public access boardwalk along Shaw's Cove.
There will also be 287 parking spaces located in a garage in one of the apartment buildings.
Mayor Michael Passero told The Day of New London that the proposed housing development is "the largest to date" in the city.
Officials said this kind of large project is needed right now, noting that Electric Boat is planning to hire thousands of workers over the next two years, according to The Day.
