Member of New London Coast Guard Academy Found Guilty of Sexual Assault, Dismissed: Report

He was charged with sexual assault by impairment last December.

NEW LONDON, CT – A member of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Class of 2016 was dismissed from service after being found guilty of sexual assault Thursday, The Day reported.

Michael Sermont of Shillington, Pa. was sentenced to one year in prison after his court martial proceeding, according to The Day. He was charged with sexual assault by impairment on Dec. 28, 2015.

The incident occurred around Sept. 4 of last year, The Day reported. Shermont, who originally faced up to 30 years in prison, has the right to appeal his conviction and sentence.
